Natural Stone Slabs in the GTA for Countertops

Natural Stone Slabs in the GTA

Natural stone slabs, very popular for countertops, are available at many GTA outlets. However, not all slabs are created equal! Even some hardware franchises are now carrying granite slabs. But, while some of these sources will supply you with inexpensive granite, they may not be able to guarantee quality. Some bargain outlets require you to choose a granite slab by looking through small samples, an impossible task. Unlike synthetic products, a small sample of natural stone can’t really give you an accurate picture of what the entire slab looks like. A natural stone countertop is an investment, and, as you would with any investment, you should consult with experts and make a wise decision.

Finding a Stone Supplier

The best source for natural stone slabs in the GTA is a stone importer-distributor. Choose a company that’s been in business for several years, preferably a family-owned enterprise that’s directly involved with importing the stone. These types of companies possess an expertise, experience and level of customer service that’s simply not available from a large franchise operation.

Choosing a stone slab can be difficult, simply because granite and marble are both available in a wide range of colours and with a variety of veining and patterning. Exotic stone comes in vivid blues, reds, greens and yellows, as well as combinations of colours. Some stones are patterned with bold striations or waves, others are flecked with gold or splashed with black. However, most homeowners opt for stone in more neutral shades: white, cream, tan, brown, grey or black. These less exotic tones complement any style of interior design and go well with any colour scheme. A knowledgeable staff member at a stone importer can help you narrow down the selection and choose exactly the right stone for you.

Other considerations when choosing a natural stone countertop are finish and edges. Finishes for granite and marble slab are generally either polished or honed (matte). Most marble is polished to a satiny shine, since high polish brings out the natural luminosity of that beautiful stone, which catches and reflects light. Granite can be either polished or honed, a finish that helps to hide the smudges and scratches that active use can bring.

Edges give your countertop a particular look. An ornate edge such as ogee, dupont or cove is more suited to a traditional kitchen. Rough cut goes well with a rustic look. Extreme reverse bevel or rounded bullnose may be more suitable for sleek modern décor. It’s also possible to have edges custom cut or to combine various cuts.

The Process

Better stone importers don’t sell slabs directly to consumers. Instead, you will be able to "tag” your slab. Pertinent details will be faxed to your fabricator, who will order the slab. The fabricator will measure your cabinetry and design a template for the countertop, then use the template to cut the stone slab. Your fabricator will also cut the edges you want and then install the countertop.
