Tips to Know to Help Clean and Maintain Marble

Tips to Know to Help Clean and Maintain MarbleFor hundreds of years marble has been used for a variety of purposes. From art to construction, it has been an ideal material for Greek and Roman sculptures and Middle Eastern architectural design, just to name a few.

Marble comes in an assortment of colours and patterns, with quarries established around the world.

Marble is categorized as a metamorphic stone, meaning that it is a type of rock in that's composition transforms over time. In many instances, limestone or dolomite are exposed to intense heat and pressure, which then re-crystallizes the minerals into marble.

Marble is an organically porous stone and, as a result, it is crucial that proper care is taken when cleaning marble pieces. Improper care could lead to scratched surfaces, forming ideal spots for dirt to rest in. Cleaning marble on a regular basis will maintain the piece's beauty and improve its longevity.

Regular Marble Cleaning Instructions

A damp chamois or microfiber cloth is ideal for preventing stains from forming on a marble piece, while also preventing any scratching that can be caused by using a normal cloth. It is important that the piece is dried immediately with a dry, clean chamois or microfiber cloth, since too much moisture could cause damage to marble's porous surface.

Mild hand or dishwashing soap diluted with water is all that is needed for the daily maintenance of marble. Follow with the steps and tips mentioned above, and the marble piece will be properly cared for.

Yearly Cleaning Instructions

Applying a marble polish twice a year is recommended to maintain the quality of any marble feature.

Stain Removal Instructions

As is the case with most stone care recommendations, the use of a poultice is typically advised to remove stains from a marble piece.
To create a poultice for marble stain removal, the following is required:
  • Paper towel;
  • Plastic wrap;
  • Masking tape; and
  • 20 per cent hydrogen peroxide, which may be purchased at any local drug store, grocery store or cleaning supply store.
Pour the 20 per cent hydrogen peroxide onto a piece of paper towel and lay on the surface of the stain. The paper towel wet with hydrogen peroxide forms the poultice solution.

Cover the poultice with some plastic wrap, taping it in place with the masking tape. This type of tape is safe enough to use on the marble surface. Using a different type of tape with a stronger adhesive could damage the marble surface.

The poultice should sit for about two days or 48 hours, however it is recommended that the stain is checked after the first three hours and every so often after that.

Once the stain has dissolved, remove the plastic wrap and poultice from the surface. Wipe the marble piece with a clean, damp chamois or microfiber cloth, followed with a dry cloth.

As always, it is best to prevent any type of damage from occurring to a marble piece. Using items like coasters, towels and place mats will help to prevent marble countertops and other marble pieces from staining, scratching and chipping, as well as prolong the life span of the piece.
