What Is Exotic Marble?

 

Marble is a metamorphic rock, meaning that its integral composition transforms over time from exposure to heat and pressure. There are many types of transformations that metamorphic rocks undergo, with the most frequent being contact metamorphism which results in igneous rocks. Other types of rock metamorphisms are regional metamorphism and dynamic metamorphism.

Marble is a type of stone that comes in many exotic colours, ranging widely from one end of the colour spectrum to the other. This wide variety of colours means that marble easily matches the decor of any space. Aside from style and appearance, it is also important to consider the marble piece's functionality within a space. For example, because marble is a type of porous rock, it is susceptible to stains, scratches and cracking. Marble tends to work well in washrooms and for flooring, fireplace surrounds, columns and other architectural features.

 

Since marble is a metamorphic rock, it is derived from what is known as a parent stone. Three common types of parent rocks that aid in the creation of marble stones are limestone, travertine and onyx.

 

Both limestone and travertine are examples of sedimentary rocks. Limestone is made up of calcite minerals, which originate from marine organisms. Travertine also contains calcite minerals, however they originate specifically from hot water springs and the streams leading to the springs.

 

 

Onyx is icicle-like structures found in limestone caves and comprised of calcium carbonate. These icicles are made through the dripping of calcareous water, forming what is called stalagmites or stalactites. Stalagmites and stalactites are essentially the same thing, but their locations within a limestone cave are different. For instance, stalagmites are the onyx icicles formed on the roof of the cave, while stalactite refers to the icicles formed on the cave's ground.

 

Marble has been used in various forms for centuries, historically being the medium of choice by artists and craftsmen. Today marble is the medium of choice by designers and homeowners. Adding exotic marble features to any space will beautify the room's appearance and provide the owner with an investment that will increase in value for years to come.
