Choosing the Right Interior Granite Slab in Toronto

Interior Granite Slabs in Toronto

The use of granite slabs in Toronto is very popular for interior residential renovation and remodelling, particularly for kitchen countertops or durable floor tiling.  Granite is famed for its durability while being a pleasing material to the eye due to its attractive surface complexion. Created from the melded minerals that exist within it (quartz, feldspar, biotite mica and amphibole), granite can come in various hues, shades and tones.  This makes granite extremely popular with interior and exterior designers as they can tailor the product to the specific tastes of their clients while nearly always guaranteeing a unique appearance to the finished product.

Granite Interior Design

Why choose granite as a material over say marble or other popular stone materials when remodelling or renovating your residential or commercial property?  Simply put, granite is a cost-effective, durable, easily workable and clean material that can be tailored to any clients need be it size, shape or colour.  The durable nature of granite makes it perfect for kitchens as it is an incredibly heat resistant igneous rock, so there are no worries about damaging it with hot pots or pans.  Since it is quite easy to work with and therefore fabricate, granite can be used to suit any type of kitchen, big or small.  Its dense nature gives it a beautiful and natural shine that will brighten any home, and it can easily be cleaned.  Once it’s correctly installed by a qualified fitter or fabricator, granite is extremely hard to damage or chip.  Upon installation of any granite material, be it a countertop or other applications, it is recommended that the material is sealed.

Granite Sealing

Granite is a porous material that should be professionally sealed upon installation to make it less prone to staining from liquid damage over time.  To reduce damage, it is recommended that any minor pits or fissures in granite slabs should be sealed using either a resin with hydro-repellent or a resin with epoxy, as both of these techniques will extend the life of the granite slab and ensure the client receives a better product.  Any reputable granite fitter or fabricator will be able to provide a sealing service upon installation.

Interior Granite Slab Facts

Granite is an igneous rock formation that is composed of potassium feldspar, plagioclase feldspar, and quartz; differing amounts of muscovite, biotite, and hornblende-type amphiboles.  This mix of minerals makes granite a very tough and durable substance while also maintaining an attractive surface complexion and composition.

Granite is mined from quarries in large blocks and then sliced to create bundles. The granite slabs in that bundle will match and mimic each other in directionality and colour variation. Most slabs are rarely longer than 10 feet and granite is rated as 6 on the MOHS scale of hardness.

Granite has tiny pits or fissures between the various mineral crystals.  This is caused primarily by biotite, a small black minerals found in the slab. The pits do not make the granite less durable and are common in all granite and should be expected when dealing with natural stone materials.
