Wondering how to choose between granite and marble
slabs? Read on to learn about the advantages of granite, and the various types
and uses of the stone in your home.
Granite
Tiles Versus Slabs
One of the biggest home renovation decisions you will
have to make is choosing between granite and marble slabs for your GTA home.
Both stones have many positive qualities – and a few drawbacks. Both are expensive,
although some types of marble – Carrara, for example – are surprisingly
affordable. But let’s suppose that, after weighing the advantages of the two
stones, you end up going with granite because of its durability. Your options
don’t end with the choice of stone.
Your first step is to decide between slab and tile.
Granite tiles are a blend of minerals, but other than that – and their shape –
it is hard to tell the difference between granite tiles and a solid granite
slab. Tiles come in many colours, patterns and styles. They share granite’s
longevity, stain and burn resistance, and low maintenance. They are easy to
install and are much more flexible design-wise for fitting in unusual floor
shapes. And they are easily replaced.
What tiles lack is simple: the ‘Wow Factor.’ There is
nothing like a granite slab, with its flecks of colour, changing striations and
haughty air of permanence and strength. In fact, a useful compromise might be
to install a granite slab for your kitchen countertop or island – and use
granite tiles on your floor.
The
Many Colours of Granite
When we think of granite we tend to think a grey
monolithic mass – but this is where granite really packs a surprise. Granite
falls into six colour palettes – but each stone is an original, and all of them
contain countless striations or streaks, as well as flecks of colour. The six
colour bases mean you can make granite work with just about any décor.
- Azul granite is a good kitchen choice and
contains blues in an often-complex pattern.
- Black granite is also common in kitchens
and is a bold choice, bringing a modern sophistication to the room.
- Gold and copper granites are great if the
backdrop in the kitchen is white; the contrast will make your granite stand
out!
- Green granite has a wide range of
supporting colours, including aqua and blues.
- Rose granite is rare, with soft pinks to
gentle lavenders.
- White granite is great if your kitchen
cabinets are dark.
Installing
Granite
Whether you go with granite tiles or slabs – or decide
to use both – you will need a professional installer. It’s a big job. The
existing furniture and flooring may have to be removed and disposed of. A
potentially large expense could arise with the preparation of your subfloor.
Stone is heavy! Additionally, there are a host of smaller costs including
delivery charges and the cost per square foot to install the floor.
Although granite is incredibly durable, it does need
cleaning. Abrasives should be avoided for both countertops and tile floors.
Detergent is harsh on stone and it is always wise to clean up spills quickly – even
though granite will not stain in the same way as marble. Finally, the granite
will need to be resealed periodically.
The dilemma of choosing between granite and marble
slabs for your GTA home will bring forward your creativity. Enjoy the process!
