Do I have to seal my stone? My friend has had granite countertops for years and she never sealed them.

Is it really necessary?  I've never sealed it before and when my friend mentioned she doesn't either, it brought major concern to my husband.  If it is an important step to maintain and care for our granite slab countertop, how often should we be sealing it? Once, or more?

Thank you!

To keep your stone looking like new, you really should seal it regularly.  Sealing helps to prevent the absorption of liquids and even some spices that can stain your stone.  Ask your fabricator to get it sealed professionally the first time.  Then you can keep it up yourself and it’s easy to do.  It may not be mandatory per sé, but it is more of a strongly suggested preventative maintenance routine.
